Greg Sankey is in Knoxville as Tennessee is set to face Oklahoma on Saturday.

The big news of the week, though, is the firing of Brian Kelly as LSU‘s head coach, followed by the dismissal of now-former athletics director Scott Woodward. The latter firing was notable: it came a day after Louisiana governor Jeff Landry said that a committee led by LSU’s Board of Supervisors, not Woodward, would lead the search for the Tigers’ next head coach, in a massive vote of no-confidence.

Sankey was asked if state governors should have that level of influence on a college football program.

“Well, that’s really up to governors,” Sankey joked, per a video from The Oklahoman’s Colton Sulley.

The SEC commissioner then touched on his relationship with Landry, as well as governors from across the SEC.

“I’ve met Governor Landry. I’ve talked to him. I saw him on the sideline of the Sugar Bowl back in January. But I think I’ve had healthy relationships with governors across our footprint,” Sankey said. “Not a lot of conversations about what happens in athletic departments, but I’m certain they all have an interest, given the visibility of our universities and the visibility of our athletic programs.”
