Greg Sankey takes aim at Big Ten, Big 12 for Friday matchups created to ‘grab money’

Greg Sankey took an interesting approach when asked about the SEC’s stance against playing conference games on Fridays and during the week rather than on the weekend.

Sankey spoke to reporters Monday at the APSE’s annual Southeast Region meeting and defended the SEC’s stance, saying “”For everybody that thinks we just grab money, we could grab money just by putting games on different nights of the week.”

Sankey is absolutely aiming these comments at the Big Ten, ACC and Big 12 in this context. The three conferences all play Friday and sometimes Thursday night games during the regular season in an attempt to gain more national attention rather than have games buried on Saturdays with heavyweight fights now commonplace each and every week. The SEC’s recent additions of Texas and Oklahoma, which prompted reaction from the Big Ten to add USC, Oregon, etc, definitely had a hand in this change, too.

Fox Sports’ Tim Brando, who it should be noted works for the network that airs many of these Friday night games for the Big Ten and Big 12, was outspoken in response to Sankey’s comments, posting the following on social media under Tuscaloosa News’ Chase Goodbread’s original quote. (Brando meant to type “quote” instead of “quiet” in the below post)
