Gunner Stockton, Chris Cole land in ESPN’s ‘Week 6 Heisman’ rankings after Alabama win
It often takes a well-rounded effort for a team to prevail in a top 5 showdown. The Georgia Bulldogs provided just that in their 20-17 victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide in Week 6. Now, two of their players are being commended for their performances.
Quarterback Gunner Stockton and linebacker Chris Cole both earned a spot on ESPN’s Bill Connelly’s “Heisman of Week 6” list following Georgia’s win. The Bulldogs’ quarterback slotted in at No. 2, behind Louisville running back Isaac Brown. Here’s what Connelly wrote about Stockton:
With Georgia winning a series of cupcake blowouts to start the season, [Stockton] didn’t get much of a chance to make an impression. In Georgia’s first big game of the year, however, he shined… and [proved] that the improved vertical passing we saw early this season wasn’t just a product of playing poor competition.
Cole snagged the No. 4 spot in Connelly’s rankings after a dominant defensive effort: eight tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack and two pass breakups. Here’s Connelly’s analysis on Cole:
Cole is probably Georgia’s best all-around player, and he was everywhere in Tuscaloosa. He stopped EJ Crowell for big losses on both run and pass plays, he sacked Keelon Russell in the third quarter, and he twice dropped into coverage to break up passes to Ryan Coleman-Williams. Wherever Russell looked, he saw Cole.
The Bulldogs, individually and as a team, hope to build on those showings in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry vs. Auburn on Saturday afternoon (3:30 p.m. E.T., ESPN).
