The Ole Miss Rebels are getting ready for the biggest Egg Bowl in recent memory for the program against Mississippi State, as a win against their hated rivals all but guarantees them a spot in the College Football Playoff.

It’s hard to overstate how important this game is for the Rebels, but that has all been overshadowed by the speculation surrounding head coach Lane Kiffin and whether he will stay with Ole Miss or leave for Florida or LSU.

ESPN analyst Heather Dinich joined Paul Finebaum on Sunday morning to discuss the Kiffin situation on SportsCenter and expanded on how she believes the committee would consider a potential departure from Kiffin come Selection Sunday.

“This would be compared to Jordan Travis and Florida State,” Dinich said. “Just like if your starting quarterback is not going to play in the College Football Playoff. Ole Miss without Lane Kiffin is not going to fall out of the College Football Playoff. Might they drop a spot or 2 because they don’t have their head coach? Yes, that’s possible, but the best comparison is to go back to Florida State… There’s a 12-team playoff now, though, so Ole Miss is not going to fall out.”

Nobody knows what Kiffin’s ultimate fate will be when it comes to staying or leaving, but it should be cleared up next Saturday following the Egg Bowl, as that’s when Ole Miss AD Keith Carter said they will publicly address Kiffin’s future in Oxford.

Should he decide to leave, then Dinich’s analysis could become reality as the Rebels would be heading into the playoff without the man who got them there.
