Hugh Freeze has his hands full entering the 2025 season at Auburn. After an 11-14 record in his first 2 seasons with the Tigers and no bowl wins, it sure feels like the year to put up or shut up for Freeze.
Unfortunately, Auburn wide receiver Malcolm Simmons was arrested recently on domestic assault charges. Those charges included domestic violence by strangulation or suffocation with a $20,000 bond.
During Wednesday’s press conference, Freeze discussed the situation and said that Simmons is currently clear to practice:
“Based on the information that I’ve been given from our campus administration, who have knowledge of the matter, he’s been cleared to participate in team activities,” said Hugh Freeze.
Asked again about the matter later, Freeze reiterated his original comment and said that was “all the information I have.” According to Davis Baker with WSFA 12 News in Montgomery, Simmons’ preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 8.
Simmons joined the Tigers as a 4-star in-state recruit in the 2024 recruiting class. He was an immediate contributor to the program, finishing 3rd on the team last year with 451 receiving yards to go with 40 catches and 3 touchdowns.
Now, we’ll have to wait and see how his situation develops throughout training camp before we get to the season.
