Jack Pyburn spent his first three seasons at Florida, but transferred to LSU this offseason for his final year. Each season in Gainesville, he got better and contributed more and more. Expectations are even higher for Pyburn, and he said he is a better athlete than he was during his time at Florida.
“I think a big part of that is just how much more athletic I am than I’ve ever been,” Pyburn recently said, per LouisianaSports.net. “I’m faster and stronger and twitchier than I’ve ever been. I’ve built the lower body strength that I needed, squatting damn near 600 pounds, running close to 21 mph which is over a mile and hour faster than I was at my previous school.”
One thing that Pyburn has said has helped him is finding a coach who is really going to focus where he needs to get better as a pass rusher and help him get there.
“All those things help, and when you get a coach that can really hone in on your exact skillset not just a basic idea of it, exactly what I need to be a successful pass rusher, the angles that I need to take, the tracks that I need to take,” Pyburn said. “It’s been amazing the progress that I’ve made.”
If he is able to improve like he did during his time at Florida, he could be in store for a monster season in Baton Rouge. Entering last season, Pyburn had 20 career tackles. Last season, he burst onto the scene, finishing with 60 tackles, 1 sack and 1 interception.
Having Pyburn is huge for LSU, as the Tigers have struggled on defense the last couple seasons. They face a huge test in Week 1, as they travel to take on a high-powered Clemson offense led by All-American and Heisman Trophy candidate Cade Klubnik.
