South Carolina QB won’t play this year due to injury, plans to join Will Muschamp’s coaching staff

South Carolina quarterback Jay Urich’s playing career appears to be over, as the redshirt junior will join the South Carolina coaching staff after a season-ending injury, Will Muschamp confirmed to media Tuesday.
Urich is set to have surgery to help a chronic shoulder injury.
Urich played in 8 games in 2019, primarily as a utility player, taking snaps at wide receiver and on special teams. The 3-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll will head to graduate school to become a graduate assistant for South Carolina.
Muschamp had high praise for Urich saying, “Jay has a calling. He’s going to make a difference in peoples’ lives in everything he does.”
“Jay Urich and I have met numerous times over the last three or four months. Jay’s had some chronic issues with his shoulder but Jays got a strong calling in life to make a difference in people’s lives,” Muschamp said on Tuesday. “He’s going to have surgery tomorrow and his shoulder is going to take a medical.
“He’s going to graduate in December. And then we’ll move on to be a graduate assistant for us and help Connor Shaw in a life skills program that we have here, within our program. He’s going to make a difference in people’s lives and everything he does, in Jay’s got a gift. He’s got a gift of communicating with people. He’s got a strong faith, he has started original design his foundation, which is going to benefit underprivileged kids here in Colombia, to make a difference in their lives, to help them to have scholarships and different things and ideas that he has that he and I’ve had numerous conversations about.”
A South Carolina native, Urich is a former 3-star prospect who signed with South Carolina in the recruiting class of 2017.
South Carolina opens the 2020 season by hosting Tennessee on Saturday, with a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff on SEC Network.
