Jaylin Simpson has returned his first interception for a touchdown after 4 years at Auburn.

The Tigers defensive back stepped in front of an errant pass thrown by UMass QB Taisun Phommachanh to start the 3rd quarter and returned it for 6 to make it a 38-7 game.

It was only the 2nd play of the 2nd half. That about sums up how things have gone for the Minutemen so far.

Simpson has had a strong day for the Tigers, totaling 3 tackles with the above interception and a fumble recovery. He has Auburn’s only interception of the day through the 10-minute mark of the 3rd quarter.

Auburn has not allowed just about anything through the air so far Saturday. Phommachanh has thrown for just 48 yards on 7 of 13 completions. It’s obvious UMass would prefer to run the ball, and those stats back that up.

It’s hard to learn too much from Auburn’s day against UMass, but this is certainly a strong start to the Hugh Freeze era.
