A familiar name in SEC football circles appears to have made his return to coaching.

Bama247’s Mike Rodak is reporting that former Tennessee Volunteers‘ head coach and longtime SEC assistant Jeremy Pruitt is set to be hired by Jacksonville State as an analyst.

Pruitt, who served as the head coach of the Volunteers from 2018 to 2020, has been out of college coaching since he was fired with cause at the end of the 2020 campaign by Tennessee after it was revealed that he committed a number of serious recruiting violations during his tenure with the program.

The former head coach for the Vols is also under a “show-cause” penalty until 2029, which required Jacksonville State to go through a lengthy process with the NCAA before a hearing could be finalized. A hearing was held in October and Jacksonville State was tasked with putting together a proposal to the NCAA in order to gain approval.

Per Rodak’s report, Jacksonville State has received the go-ahead by the NCAA to hire Pruitt in an analyst role.

“We applaud the intentional effort that JSU put into its proposed plan,” the NCAA wrote in its ruling per Rodak’s report. “The proposal, collaborative discussion at the hearing and outcome demonstrate the show-cause process working as intended. Additionally, the COI appreciates JSU’s stated commitment to compliance and its transparent acknowledgement that potential future violations carry risk.”

Pruitt will be suspended for the remainder of the 2025 season but is cleared to help Jacksonville State in a more direct capacity beginning in 2026.

Pruitt has a long history as an assistant coach, making a name for himself as one of Nick Saban’s top staffers during their dynastic run in the 2010s.
