Florida coach Jim McElwain hosted his weekly radio show Thursday night to talk about last week’s 14-9 win over Kentucky, the upcoming showdown with SEC East rival Tennessee and Florida’ offense, among other topics.

On the defense’s performance in last week’s 14-9 win over Kentucky:

“They had six or seven plays inside the 4-yard line and for (Kentucky) to only came up with three points, thatโ€™s something special.”

On Tennessee’s offense, defense and coaching:

โ€œ(Tennessee) was up 17-0…Iโ€™m sure theyโ€™re looking at that and just wondering how (they lost). Defensively, they just shut Oklahoma down. Oklahoma got some big luck plays, but never really got into a rhythm.”

Defensively this is a team thatโ€™s playing really well up front…Offensively, theyโ€™ve got a couple of racers at running back.

“Obviously, that quarterback (Dobbs), heโ€™s a guy that triggers it all. He takes care of the ballโ€ฆ(Tennessee) is not turning it over and heโ€™s not throwing it to the other team.โ€

โ€œThis is a team that has done a great job in the three years Butch (UT head coach Jones) has been there. Theyโ€™re playing really disciplined football. Theyโ€™ve got numbers on the d-line and theyโ€™re really staying fresh.”

On kicker Austin Hardin’s struggles with field goals in the last two games:

“Kickers are a different breed. Weโ€™ll see what happens this week. Itโ€™s an adventure, itโ€™s like going to the circus. Itโ€™s something weโ€™ve got to get handled โ€“ getting points down in the red area. Weโ€™re leaving a lot of points. Hopefully heโ€™s only kicking extra points this weekend.”

On former coach Steve Spurrier, a central figure in the Florida-Tennessee rivalry:

“I canโ€™t wait until retires because then I can go really pick his brain. He is a true Gator and loves this place โ€“ it means a lot to him…Heโ€™s a guy I look forward to learning from.”

On possible new uniforms:

โ€œOn Oct. 16 people from Nike headquarters are coming in to talk about some designs.โ€

On the GatorTail package on offense, which McElwain alluded to earlier this week:

โ€œItโ€™s something different with some different guys behind center. We only had two scholarship quarterbacks coming into this year, we knew we were thin.โ€

โ€œYou want me to go ahead and tell Tennessee what weโ€™re going to do?โ€

More on Tennessee QB Joshua Dobbs:

“Heโ€™s a great quarterback. They do a lot of outstanding things on offense, as thatโ€™s Butchโ€™s background. Weโ€™ve got our work cut out for us.”

On UF RB Jordan Scarlett, who was not used against Kentucky:

โ€œLike any player, heโ€™s got to show consistency throughout the week…Jordanโ€™s a really good player. Heโ€™s going to play a lot of football and heโ€™s going to play this week.โ€

Associate Director of Player Personnel Kevin Barbay on his desire to join McElwainโ€™s staff:

โ€œI told Coach Mac Iโ€™d do anything to work for him โ€“ Iโ€™d clean toilets or wash windows.โ€
