Joel Klatt is beginning to give his fans a preview of what he expects to happen in college football during the 2025 season. From his national title picks to what players he think can have a breakout season, he is providing fans with all kinds of coverage.

He played college football at Colorado, where he set many school records, and has been around the game ever since. He has seen many of the best college football players ever play, and he says he has seen enough to say that Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith may be the very best of them all.

“We can all say this together; the best player next season in college football is Jeremiah Smith, the wide receiver from Ohio State,” Klatt said on The Joel Klatt Show. “He is the best college football player I have ever seen. Very rarely do we see a player that comes in with all the hype of Smith. Then, he doesn’t just live up to that, he exceeds all of the expectations. When I would talk to opposing coaches and I would bring up what their plan is with Smith, they would say ‘there’s not really a plan’.

It is hard to argue after the freshman season Smith had for the Buckeyes as they went on to win the national championship in 2024. He finished with 76 catches, 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns. He scored a touchdown in each of his first 7 career games, while shattering nearly every Ohio State freshman record.

With last season being his first year in college, Smith will still have to play 2 more seasons of college football, with the 2027 NFL Draft being the first year he is eligible. It is hard to say a player is the best ever after one season, but if he is able to build off what he did last season, it would be hard to disagree with Klatt.
