LSU athletic director Joe Alleva says that former defensive coordinator John Chavis owes the school $400,000 as a buyout from his contract.

In a report from Scott Rabalais of the Advocate (Baton Rouge, La.), LSU’s legal council informed Alleva that Chavis owes the school the sum due to a buyout clause in his contract, which ran through December 2015. Chavis originally signed a three-year extension in 2012 and was given a one-year extension in December 2013. Alleva expects Chavis to cooperate.

Alleva also confirmed to the Advocate that LSU did in fact offer Chavis a three-year, $4 million contract extension that Chavis did not sign. Chavis’ contract at Texas A&M will reportedly start at $1.5 million for 2015. Alleva said the offer was “firm and fair.”

Alleva denied the “Les Miles clause” in Chavis’ contract that was reportedly a sticking point for the coordinator. There were reports that in Chavis’ extension offer, there was a clause that LSU would only be obligated to pay Chavis for six months if Les Miles were to leave the program for any reason.
