With the calendar soon to turn from January to February, Florida‘s first winter workouts are underway. It’s a chance for new head coach Jon Sumrall to get an early look at his team before spring ball kicks off on March 3.

Sumrall takes over a program that has had two winning seasons in the past six years. That’s after collecting a combined 21 wins in 2018 and 2019. Already, there are signs of a culture shift inside the program. Sumrall stated that players won’t wear the iconic Gator logo on their practice gear and will instead have to “earn it.”

After the Gators’ men’s basketball game against Auburn on Saturday, Sumrall spoke about the mentality he wants to see from his players.

“Toughness, confidence, discipline, accountability, grit, just the mindset we’re going to work hard, we’re never going to back down in anything we ever do,” he said, per WCJB-TV’s Olivia Eisenhauer.

That includes players being “put … through some things that they have not experienced,” Sumrall added.

“It’s gonna be real. It’s gonna be live,” he said. “You wanna have some fun? Maybe come sit in the back lot behind our fence at 6 in the morning this Wednesday. See how that comes.”
