Jon Sumrall isn’t one to shirk blame.
The Florida head coach blamed a lot of things on himself following the Gators’ 27-8 loss to Georgia, including a sideline interference penalty following Aaron Philo’s 2nd interception of the afternoon. The interference penalty gave Georgia the ball in the red zone, leading to a Bulldogs field goal.
Sumrall commented on the penalty following the game. Here’s what he had to say:
“That’s on me, the head coach is a dumbass,” Sumrall said. “I wanted to go out there and make the freakin tackle, that’s what I wanted to do. I just lost my mind and was ready to go walk out in the field, and for a second probably lost my cool.”
Here’s the play in question. It does not show Sumrall laying into the official to draw the penalty, but this is the play he was amped up about:
Florida has struggled as of late. The Gators are 1-3 across their past 4 games after starting SEC play 2-0 with wins over Auburn and Ole Miss. On Saturday, Florida’s woes started at the QB position — Philo threw a pair of interceptions early, and the Bulldogs defense was effective in holding Tramell Jones to similar success. The Gators couldn’t run the ball, either — Florida totaled 48 rushing yards compared to Georgia’s 217.
Florida will look to stop the bleeding next week as the Gators prepare to face Oklahoma.
