Josh Heupel’s Tennessee squad will enter the College Football Playoff as the No. 9 seed in the bracket, with the Volunteers making their first-ever appearance in the CFP.

That No. 9 seed does mean that the Vols will be hitting the road for their opening-round matchup, and they will be headed to Columbus to take on No. 8 Ohio State in the Horseshoe on Dec. 21.

Heupel provided his thoughts on not being able to host a Playoff game in Knoxville, explaining that having a clash of this magnitude at Neyland would been great. But in the end, he and the program are just excited to be in the bracket and know that beating strong teams in different venues is just part of going on a deep run in the CFP.

“Certainly would have loved to have had a home game here for our fanbase. But at the end of the day, you’re in the Playoffs. You’re going to play elite competition … during the course of this run,” Heupel said. “We have an opportunity here in Week 1 to go play a great Ohio State team. We know we’ve got to be at our best and now that we have an opponent, our preparation starts. It’s a great opportunity for us.”

As a result of the draw, Tennessee will likely play in some cold weather that night in Columbus. However, Heupel downplayed the impact that the weather will have on the Vols.

Tennessee and Ohio State will face off on Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. ET.
