Josh Heupel got a big game from a transfer receiver on Saturday.
Dont’e Thorton, who transferred from Oregon to Tennessee over the offseason, has slowly but surely been finding his footing for the Vols. On Saturday, he had his best game of the season.
Thorton had 63 yards on 3 receptions, but it was his play without the ball that stood out to Heupel. Thorton was instrumental in providing blocks for Tennessee as it racked up 253 yards on the ground. The Vols have been looking for a receiver to match the blocking that Bru McCoy was able to provide, and Thorton proved that he’s capable of that on Saturday.
“Dont’e had a really nice performance,” Heupel said in his press conference Monday. “I thought he did a really good job with the ball not in his hands and when the ball came his way, he made plays. He was comfortable and performed extremely well.”
Tennessee is looking for back-t0-back wins this weekend as it takes on UConn in its homecoming game to kickoff the November slate.
