Alabama has brought in former Louisville tight end Richard Owens to become its new TE coach.
Owens has spent the past 3 seasons working for his alma mater as an offensive line coach. He’s worked in multiple position groups and in various coordinator roles across 16 seasons in college football. He now joins the Crimson Tide and will be tasked with leading the TE room.
Here’s what Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer had to say about Owens following his announcement of Owens to the coaching staff:
“Richard Owens possesses a diverse skillset and knowledge for the game that he has grown over time as both a player and coach,” DeBoer said. “His background will allow him to contribute to not only the success of our tight ends but also to our offense as a whole. He also has a familiarity with our staff and the Southeast Region that made him our top choice to fill this role.”
Before joining the Cardinals in 2023, Owens spent some time with UAB as first a tight ends coach, then as an offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach. He would then join South Alabama as its tight ends coach for one year before becoming the offensive line coach in 2016.
Owens spent some time playing in the NFL. He was picked up by the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2004. He spent 3 years with the Vikings before joining the St. Louis Rams in 2007.
