Kalen DeBoer praises under-the-radar RB as competition for snaps heats up
Alabama will have a somewhat-different look in its running back room this season with Justice Haynes no longer in Tuscaloosa.
Jam Miller is expected to be Alabama’s starter, though former top-100 recruit Richard Young has received some offseason hype as well. But what about Louisiana transfer Dre Washington, who is beginning his first fall camp with Alabama this week?
Washington has been impressive to start fall camp, head coach Kalen DeBoer told reporters on Wednesday.
“Dre Washington, thought he had a really nice practice today,” DeBoer said. “You can see a new guy that’s come in, and then he’s seeing the install for a second, third time from the spring, summer and to fall. Just like we were talking about the quarterback position, it’s clicking more. He’s gotten himself right in the mix there, for sure, as we kind of narrow down.”
Washington was very productive during his time at Louisiana. He recorded at least 350 rushing yards in each of his last 3 seasons, including a 515-yard campaign in 2023. He rushed for a career-best 6.5 yards per carry in 2024 before entering the portal last offseason.
Miller, Young and Washington are all likely to see some game reps — at least early in the season. Sophomore Daniel Hill could also be in the mix.
Alabama will open the 2025 season on the road at Florida State on Aug. 30.
