Alabama lost its season opener to Florida State on Saturday by a score of 31-17.

Florida State seemed to catch Alabama off guard with its unique offensive system designed by former Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn. The Noles rushed for 230 yards in the win and controlled the pace-of-play thanks to their success on the ground.

However, Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack said that Alabama wasn’t surprised by Florida State’s offense.

“We were not surprised by anything,” Wommack told reporters on Monday in Tuscaloosa. “We were prepared for a number of things they were doing, including some of the trick plays… we did not play up to what we’re capable of as a defense.”

Alabama will need to be much better on defense moving forward. This was also an issue last season for the Crimson Tide in losses to Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Oklahoma. Some analysts like Greg McElroy and Dan Orlovsky have even called Alabama’s effort into question following this performance by the Noles.

Alabama will look to rebound next week against Louisiana-Monroe.
