Kentucky coaching rumors: Top target emerges to replace Mark Stoops, per report

Mark Stoops is out at Kentucky.
That report came late on Sunday night, the icing on the cake of one of the craziest days in SEC history. This didn’t come with all the drama of the Lane Kiffin debacle, but it was intriguing nonetheless.
So who will replace a guy who went 82-80 in his Kentucky career and became the Wildcats’ all-time wins leader? Per CFB insider Matt Zenitz, Mark Stoops could be replaced by Oregon OC Will Stein, who is a popular name among industry sources:
Stein is a Kentucky native, as Zenitz mentioned. One thing he didn’t note in his tweet? Stein is a Louisville graduate. Would Wildcat fans embrace him?
Stein quarterbacked the Cardinals from 2008 to 2012, then served as an assistant on the Louisville staff for a couple of years. At 36 years old, Stein doesn’t have any head coaching experience, but he is one of the hottest coordinators on the market today.
After all the other carousel movement, particularly in the SEC, on Sunday, Stein would be a pretty solid hire for Kentucky. We’ll see what happens as this story continues to break.
For now, though, it seems Kentucky has a top target in mind to replace its soon-to-be-former head coach.
