Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin has done a solid job guiding the Aggies into the SEC, but after another eight-win season, he may be in hot water if the team suffers another late season collapse.
At the top of the list of the Aggies’ concerns is the quarterback, which Sumlin addressed during the SEC teleconference on Monday.
Sumlin on the spring:
โOur QB position is up for grabs, we have three guys continuing to compete. We return a 1,000-yard rusher, four guys that have started on the offense line โ that will take pressure off our first-year starter. Offensively we are ready to go. Our interior people on defense is as good as itโs been.โ
Sumlin’s thoughts on early signing period:
โWe push the envelope since weโve been here on getting commits earlyโฆ How do we get to know these guys while signing them early? Thatโs the challenge. The early signing day is great but itโs more difficult on the high school players and coaches.โ
His philosophy on redshirting:
โThereโs two sides of that street. We had to play guys early when I got here. Now a guy like Mike Evans, we only got two years of college football out of himโฆ Last year we got to redshirt more interior players. Skill guys are going to play here, thatโs why they come to play. Interior guys need to redshirt, there are some grown men playing in this league.โ
His thoughts on new training staff:
โMarkโs (Hocke) done a tremendous job. Heโs been at Alabama, been at Georgia, he knows what heโs doingโฆ We need to play better at the end of the season, we need to finish.โ
