Kirby Smart was among the first coaches to speak during the SEC’s weekly media teleconference Wednesday. During his segment of the call, Smart discussed the status of his team, as well as the season opening matchup against the Mountaineers.
The Georgia-Appalachian State game kicks off Saturday night at 6:15 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Here are the highlights from Smart’s call:
- Excited to have a big home opener against a program with a winning culture, they return 14-15 starters, much like we do
- Roquan Smith’s leadership, does he compare against others? He’s done a great job leading the team, he gives consistent effort every day. He didn’t play in the spring but he was in every meeting, that’s not something every player does.
- on the challenges of running the ball against Appalachian State: They are the fastest defense I’ve seen on tape, that goes for a number of positions. They do a tremendous job defensively. The are outweighed but they get leverage. One of the best defenses I’ve seen on tape, they do a tremendous job.
- What have you learned from Saban? The organization structure. If you put everything together, he’s very detailed oriented. His attention to detail is a key that I carry over.
- Have you seen anything from Nick Chubb to make you feel like he’ll be better? I certainly have. I didn’t know at the time that he wasn’t 100% (last season) but I see it now. He has flashed back to his freshmen, sophomore form. He’s a unique guy, he’s one of the most committed guys, in terms of taking care of his body, that I’ve ever seen.
