There was a lot of hype leading up to Bryce Young’s first Alabama start. And the quarterback lived up to all of it.

Young passed for 344 yards and 4 touchdowns in the Crimson Tide’s 44-13 victory over Miami in the season opener on Saturday in Atlanta. It was a terrific showing, and it could be a sign of things to come for Young and the Alabama offense.

It also impressed ESPN broadcaster Kirk Herbstreit, who included Young among his top performing players of the opening week of the 2021 season. Young may end up on Herbstreit’s weekly list quite a bit this season, and he’s off to a good start.

Here is Herbstreit’s full list of top Week 1 performers (SEC players in bold):

1. McKenzie Milton, QB, Florida State
2. Bryce Young, QB, Alabama
3. Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss/Dontario Drummond, WR, Ole Miss
4. Riley Moss, DB, Iowa
5. Nakobe Dean, LB, Georgia
6. Taulia Tagovailoa, QB, Maryland/Dontay Demus Jr., WR, Maryland
7. Kenneth Walker III, RB, Michigan State
8. Jack Coan, QB, Notre Dame

Corral and Drummond powered Ole Miss to a 43-24 win over Louisville on Monday night in Atlanta. Corral threw for 381 yards and 1 touchdown, while Drummond had 9 catches for 177 yards and 1 touchdown.

Dean helped lead Georgia to an impressive 10-3 victory over Clemson on Saturday night in Charlotte, as he collected 5 tackles and 2 sacks in the Bulldogs’ dominant defensive performance against the Tigers.
