We’re one week away from wrapping up one of college football’s most legendary careers. When Lee Corso makes his pick for Texas-Ohio State next Saturday, it will mark the end of an era. And no matter how Corso’s selection turns out, his legendary status is secured. Kirk Herbstreit ensured it.
On Friday night, Herbstreit capped off his annual “Herbie Awards” by giving Corso his ‘Legend of the Game’ honor. Rece Davis mentioned there were “no other candidates” for the award, and that it’s a “lifetime Herbie.” That teed up Herbstreit to give Corso his flowers.
“It’s been amazing having the chance to sit next to him for the last 29 years on this show. [He] taught me so much,” Herbstreit said. “Sometimes it was just me subconsciously watching him… so many moments of just so much joy and laughter… always had that big smile, always had that love and always had that energy.”
Herbstreit has been a great caretaker on set for Corso in recent years. He also capped off an incredibly emotional video tribute to Corso that aired Friday night.
The 90-year-old’s wit isn’t as quick as it used to be, but his passion is omnipresent. He may be stepping out of the spotlight, but his impact will never fade. Like Davis routinely says, there’s only one Lee Corso. And we’re all lucky to have born witness to him.
His choice between the Longhorns and Buckeyes will come moments before kickoff on Aug. 30.
