Long a critic of the way the College Football Playoff is seeded, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin has come up with a new proposal for how teams should be evaluated:
Just trust Vegas.

The Rebels’ lead man was asked about how he’d like to see the field selected during the SEC’s Wednesday teleconference, and he laid out a well-devised strategy.
“I’ve mentioned this before: What would (Las) Vegas (casinos/oddsmakers) do? They’re the best at what they do by far. Way better than any committee. Way better than … anybody could,” Kiffin said. “When you look at teams, and you’re (asking) this team or that team and comparing them … If it was a neutral game, what would Vegas make the spread? That should tell you who the better team is.”
He then doubled down, emphasizing that the rankings would still be taken seriously in that format and they wouldn’t factor in conference balance when evaluating who the best 12 teams are.
“If you had to bet your own money, your kids’ college funds. Who would you bet on? On a money line, without the points,” Kiffin said. “To me, that… that tells you a lot. Who would Vegas make as a favorite when you’re looking at the teams on a neutral site? And Vegas doesn’t go, ‘well, there’s already this many from this conference, so this team probably shouldn’t go.'”
For now, the CFP selection committee will continue ranking teams. The first rankings will be unveiled on Nov. 4.
