Lane Kiffin defends recent NFL additions to LSU roster: ‘They chose us’

College football was shaken up once again late last week when news broke that former Ole Miss tight end Dae’Quan Wright planned to leave the Cleveland Browns and return to the college ranks after being waived and clearing the waiver wire.
To pretty much nobody’s surprise, Wright planned to enter the transfer portal and follow his former head coach Lane Kiffin to the LSU Tigers a little over a week before they welcome the Clemson Tigers to Baton Rouge for a Week 1 showdown in Death Valley.
Kiffin joined the Pat McAfee show on Tuesday afternoon to discuss his decision to allow a former NFL player to join his program, and his reasoning was about as Lane Kiffin-esque as possible.
“There’s court orders all over the country issuing the same thing for these players,” Kiffin said. “We followed those, as many coaches did… There’s all kinds of schools that recruited him (Wright). Ask Drew Rosenhouse, his agent, how many schools offered him a lot to come there, including our conference and including his previous school. But he chose us. When he decided to choose us I said ‘Hey, just get ready guys this will be Lane Kiffin, LSU, doing something that nobody else is doing.'”
While Kiffin is playing his normal “Me against everybody else” card here, he does have a bit of a point. LSU is getting a ton of headlines (and backlash) for adding Wright, but it’s hard to imagine they’ll be the last team to make this kind of move.
Until some sort of rule is put in place to prohibit this and until that rule can actually be enforced, plenty of other programs are likely to make similar moves to give their team an edge on the gridiron.
