Lane Kiffin explains why ‘dynasties are over’ in college football
Lane Kiffin is simply trying to guide Ole Miss where it’s never gone before — the College Football Playoff.
Championship-starved Rebels fans would love to see the 2025 season that has started so wonderfully go as far and as long as possible, straight through to maybe January and the national title game. Ole Miss just knocked off LSU at home in Week 5 and as October starts the Rebels are No. 4 in the AP Poll after shooting up 9 spots following that last win.
These are heady times for Kiffin’s 5-0 team, which is already 3-0 in a really tough SEC. Right now, ESPN’s SP+ metric gives Ole Miss the best odds to win the SEC title, and the Rebels haven’t won a conference crown since 1963. These are all wonderful things for a program and fan base that sorely needs it, but Kiffin is just trying to stay in the moment, in the 2025 bubble. As far as building a dynasty in Oxford, that’s a whole different discussion, one that Kiffin touched on while speaking to ESPN on Wednesday.
“In my opinion, the dynasties are over,” Lane Kiffin said. “Alabama with Coach (Nick) Saban and then Kirby (Smart) at Georgia, where they had those rosters year in, year out and there would be a bunch of wins by 30 points in the conference, those days are done.”
To supplement his point, Kiffin thought back to his time at Alabama.
“When I was at Alabama, they’d be like, ‘Go watch the outside linebackers,’ and there’s six of them over there that are first-round picks,” Kiffin said. “That’s not going to happen anymore because if they don’t play, then they’re going to leave. They can’t keep them all anymore.”
For now, Kiffin just wants to keep Ole Miss in the SEC championship and national title discussion in 2025.
