Lawyer Tim Mars advised Lane Kiffin against using AI for legal advice

Nobody can dispute Lane Kiffin’s football chops. The LSU Tigers‘ head coach routinely fields one of the best offenses in college football. While he may be a savant on the gridiron, his effort to get former Ole Miss Rebels Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris on the field for the Tigers left him scrambling for solutions from whatever sources he could find.
According to Kiffin’s friend, lawyer Tom Mars, Kiffin was routinely sending him screenshots of ChatGPT when the two would chat about LSU’s legal standing. Mars’ comments came in an interview with ESPN.
“Usually, when I would express an opinion about what LSU was doing, Lane would reply with a screenshot from ChatGPT that supported LSU’s position, which was almost always wrong,” Mars said. “Lane ignored most of my unsolicited advice, but I don’t think he’ll be using ChatGPT anymore for legal advice.”
Kiffin eventually chose to not roster Wright or Harris. That decision likely stemmed from the SEC filing a lawsuit in Alabama and scheduling a meeting with its members to potentially boot LSU out of the conference. Mars told Kiffin he recommended using some of his salary from the Tigers to have a better source than ChatGPT on standby.
“Eventually, I told him that a guy with a $91 million contract ought to have a top-notch lawyer on speed dial,” Mars said. “And not be using ChatGPT for legal advice.”
LSU and Ole Miss face off this Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. E.T. (ABC).
