Mack Brown wasn’t interested in spinning or sugarcoating his team’s loss to Virginia Tech on Friday night. Preseason No. 10 North Carolina fell to the Hokies 17-10 on the road in Blacksburg.

“Obviously the shine’s off,” Brown told reporters after the game, per ESPN’s David Hale. “The ratings mean nothing at this point. We were overrated tonight.”

Brown is in the third season of his second stint at UNC. In Year 2, Brown’s Tar Heels posted an 8-4 record, making a New Year’s Six bowl. The return of highly touted quarterback Sam Howell had many expecting a potentially big year for UNC in 2021, prompting the preseason top-10 ranking.

Luckily for UNC, the Tar Heels are in the ACC Coastal, aka the non-Clemson division of the conference. We’ll see how Brown’s squad bounces back from a Week 1 loss.
