We didn’t have to wait until Saturday of Week 1 for our first top-10 upset of the 2021 season. Unranked Virginia Tech took down No. 10 North Carolina Friday night in Blacksburg, in front of an electric Lane Stadium crowd.

The Hokies struck first, going up 7-0 in the first quarter. VT made it 14-0 in the second quarter, the score at the half.

North Carolina cut into the lead in the third quarter, making it 14-7. The teams swapped field goals in the fourth quarter, making it 17-10, which would be the game’s final score.

It call came down to a key interception. UNC was driving down 17-10 when Tar Heels QB Sam Howell threw his third interception of the game. Upon review, the call of a Chamarri Conner INT stood. VT was able to drain the remaining clock to come away with the win.
