Marcus Freeman targeted by Chicago Bears for head coaching interview, per report

Marcus Freeman is gearing up to lead Notre Dame into the national championship game on Jan. 20. He has been building something special since taking over for Brian Kelly, and the Fighting Irish have a chance to capitalize with a title.
However, Freeman’s impressive track record early on has other organizations interested in the head coach. According to a Sunday report from NFL insider Tom Pelissero, at least one NFL team wants to interview Freeman.
That would be the Chicago Bears who are looking for another head coach and one to pair with former top pick Caleb Williams. Pelissero reports the Bears want to interview Freeman but the timeline of the national championship game makes it a bit troublesome.
“I am told the team wants to interview Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman for the job. Freeman is in the midst of a magical run with the Fighting Irish to the national championship game. Obviously unlikely that he would entertain NFL overtures prior to that game,” said Pelissero. “… But the Bears have done extensive research for months on Marcus Freeman.”
If Marcus Freeman is not willing to interview prior to the completion of the national title game, it could force Chicago’s hand a bit. The NFL’s hiring cycle is in full swing with the New England Patriots reportedly hiring Mike Vrabel, taking one key candidate and vacancy off the board.
We’ll see if anything becomes of Chicago’s reported interest in the head coach of the Fighting Irish.
