Four-star cornerback Mark Fields, a South Carolina verbal commit from Charlotte, said this week that he’s strong with the Gamecocks and isn’t taking anymore official visits as previously reported by several recruiting services.

In an interview with Palmetto State recruiting expert Phil Kornbut, Fields reinforced his intentions to enroll at USC in January and said he’s growing tired of fielding calls from other SEC and ACC programs.

Earlier this year, Fields won the ‘Fastest Man’ competition at Nike’s ‘The Opening’ combine in Oregon with a blazing 4.34 in the 40-yard dash.

As one of the Gamecocks’ top incoming players, he’s expected to provide instant help next season in a secondary that ranks 12th in the SEC and last in the Eastern Division in passing yards allowed per game (237.1).

Fields has kept up with South Carolina (4-5) and its defense throughout the season and told Kornblut that he thinks current issues plaguing Lorenzo Ward’s unit are correctable.

“There’s nothing wrong with our defense, we just are missing so many key defensive lineman from last year. It’s all about the rebuilding process. Next year we will be right back on track. It’s kind of hard when you lose Clowney and Quarles and all them d-linemen who helped put pressure on the quarterback.”
