Mark Richt took over as Georgia’s head coach in 2001 and had former Georgia QB Mike Bobo with him nearly every step of the way.

Richt was the head of the Georgia program from 2001 to 2015, and Bobo was there from 2001 to 2014. He was Georgia’s QB coach from 2001 to 2006 before adding the title of offensive coordinator from 2007 to 2014.

Now Bobo is back in Athens as the new offensive coordinator under coach Kirby Smart, and there has been mixed reaction from fans.

But this week, Richt spoke to DawgNation.com and said he’s happy for Georgia fans regarding the hiring of Bobo:

“I love Mike, he’s a great person and great coach,” Richt said. “I’m really happy for him and the Bulldog nation.”

Richt explained that Bobo’s year spent under Todd Monken in 2022 as an offensive analyst will make his transition to OC even smoother:

“It’s the thing that makes a lot of sense, because no question it makes the transition easier,” Richt said. “One of the toughest things to do when you transition staff is get new people in, and especially a new coordinator that can keep the continuity of your system.

“When you have someone in there as an analyst, they know the system and understand the terminology. There can be a learning curve for the players when you bring someone new in, but when your coordinator understands the terminology and the reasons behind everything, it makes the transition much cleaner.”

Will Bobo be a success this time around at Georgia? He’ll face a lot of pressure right off the bat in 2023.
