Mark Stoops releases statement on deadly tornado outbreak in Kentucky
Kentucky coach Mark Stoops has released a statement following a tragic weekend in the state.
Tornados impacted parts of Kentucky this weekend with at least 18 people killed, according to governor Andy Beshear. Most of the casualties occurred in Laurel County, which is located less than 100 miles south of Lexington.
On Saturday night, Stoops passed along his condolences to victims and their families.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone across the Commonwealth affected by yesterday’s horrible storms,” Stoops wrote on social media. “Our hearts especially go out to those in the Somerset and London communities.
“We stand with our state through this difficult time, and we thank the first responders for their hard work at rescue and recovery.”
Stoops has been the Kentucky football head coach since 2013. He’s the longest-tenured coach in program history as he’s led the program for 140 games so far. Only one other Kentucky coach (Fran Curci) has reached the 100-game threshold. Stoops’ 67 wins are also the most in program history all-time.
The same storm also ripped through parts of Missouri and Virginia over the weekend. In total, at least 27 casualties have been confirmed across those states as a result of these deadly tornado outbreaks.
