Matt Leinart explains why Alabama WR Devonta Smith is a good candidate to win the Heisman Trophy

With conference championship weekend in the rearview mirror, college football fans can turn their attention to the Heisman Trophy discussion, which will come to an end on Jan. 5 when a winner is determined.
Finalists will be announced on Christmas Eve, but it seems as though the main contenders are Alabama wideout DeVonta Smith, Alabama quarterback Mac Jones, Florida quarterback Kyle Trask, and Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
FOX Sports analyst and former USC Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart explained why he believes the award should go to Devonta Smith.
“He proved last week in the SEC Championship Game why he is the best player in all of college football” said Leinart.
“He did it week in and week out, in the best conference in all of college football, and the toughest conference in all of college football. To be a non-quarterback Heisman Trophy winner, you have to have the flash, you have to have those ‘wow’ moments. And as a wide receiver Devonta Smith has had those week in, and week out.
“He is one of the best receivers we’ve seen in college football in a long time.”
Smith’s numbers speak for themselves. The senior has caught 98 balls for over 1,500 yards and 17 touchdowns in just 11 games. Could he be the first wide receiver to win the award since Desmond Howard in 1991?
