After just over a minute of play in the second quarter, Saturday’s game between No. 5 Miami and No. 18 South Florida was pushed into a weather delay.
Play stopped with 13:45 on the clock after lightning was detected in the vicinity of Hard Rock Stadium. Fans were asked to seek shelter within the concourse. No immediate update was provided by either school on when the game would resume.
The Hurricanes led 14-3 at the break.
Through the end of the first quarter, Miami had outgained South Florida 168-62. The Bulls were held to just 7 rushing yards on 5 carries in the opening frame.
Miami quarterback Carson Beck sliced through USF’s coverage in the first quarter as well, completing 8 of his 10 passes for 111 yards and 2 scores. Both touchdowns went to Joshua Moore — first, an 8-yard score on second-and-goal, and then a 39-yard touchdown toss on third down.
The game was being aired on The CW. Miami (2-0) is seeking a third consecutive 3-0 start to a season under coach Mario Cristobal. The Hurricanes started a season 3-0 just once in the 5 years prior.
South Florida is looking for its first 3-0 start since 2018. The Bulls beat Boise State 34-7 in their opener and then beat Florida on a game-winning field goal last week, 18-16.
