Coaches need to know which players will really fit into their organization, so the NFL combine is a great time to ask the tough, sensitive and even off-the-wall questions.

But the Falcons may have gone too far when one coach asked Ohio State DB Eli Apple if he is gay.

Former Mizzou DB Michael Sam took offense to this question even being asked.

Sam is known for being the first openly gay NFL player, and he has received a great deal of support, but some of the responses to his tweet were less than encouraging.

Falcons head coach Dan Quinn issued an apology for the inappropriate question.

“I am really disappointed in the question that was asked by one of our coaches,” Quinn said. “I have spoken to the coach that interviewed Eli Apple and explained to him how inappropriate and unprofessional this was. I have reiterated this to the entire coaching staff, and I want to apologize to Eli for this even coming up. This is not what the Atlanta Falcons are about, and it is not how we are going to conduct ourselves.”
