Michael Vick asked about Virginia Tech HC job amid reports of interest in coaching alma mater
Michael Vick is busy with his first head coaching job this fall at Norfolk State, but suddenly Vick is dealing with the rumor mill, too.
The former Virginia Tech star quarterback’s name has been linked to the sudden head coach opening in Blacksburg, after Brent Pry was fired on Sunday following an 0-3 start to the season. Not surprisingly, Vick has been asked in the past few days about his level of interest in returning to Virginia Tech to coach the program he once led on the field.
When asked directly by HBCU Gameday on Monday about the Virginia Tech job, and the 45-year-old Vick seemed to brush off the rumors while putting his focus on his current job.
This team’s got to follow my lead. My primary focus right now is Norfolk State,” said Vick. “That’s all we can focus on. I hope they’re not reading the newspaper clippings or looking into what’s happening on the social (media) pages, because I don’t do it. We’ve got Sacred Heart this week. That’s the most important thing in our lives right now.
But Vick, who is 1-2 so far this season at Norfolk State following a 60-10 loss at Rutgers last Saturday, has also reportedly said he would be interested in coaching his alma mater. Despite having no previous coaching experience, Vick got the Norfolk State job in December of 2024. Though Vick publicly declined to talk about the job, sources told CBS Sports in a report on Sunday that the Hokie legend would “definitely” be interested in the Virginia Tech opening.
Vick’s No. 7 jersey is retired at Virginia Tech, where he led to the national championship game as a redshirt freshman in 1999.
The Vick-to-Virginia Tech speculation is something to watch in the weeks ahead as the Hokies’ coaching search continues.
