For the first time ever, Western Michigan has defeated Michigan.
The Broncos pulled off the massive upset in Ann Arbor on Saturday night, beating the Wolverines 9-7. A pair of crucial turnovers from Bryce Underwood gave Western Michigan just enough to earn the win.
With Michigan leading 7-3, Underwood threw a near-pick-6 in the closing seconds of the first half — WMU’s Dillon Moore stepped out of bounds, taking the points off the board. However, the Broncos were able to tack on a field goal 2 plays later to make it 7-6 at the half.
Michigan’s offense continued to sputter in the second half, eventually allowing the Broncos to take a 9-7 lead in the 4th quarter. However, the Wolverines had a chance to go on a game-winning field goal drive in the final minutes of the game. Instead, Underwood fumbled the ball as he was attempting to pick up a first down on 2nd-and-14.
Western Michigan recovered that fumble and held on to the ball until it kicked a field goal to go up 12-7 with 35 seconds remaining.
Underwood and the Wolverines were unable to find the end zone in the final 35 seconds, giving Western Michigan the win.
This is a devastating loss for a Michigan program that is set to host Oklahoma in a high-profile matchup next weekend. The Wolverines were favored by 27 points in this game against the Broncos. It’s their biggest upset loss against an FBS opponent this century.
