Texas A&M coach Mike Elko made some interesting new comments regarding the future of college football on Monday.

In an interview with On3’s JD Pickell, Elko stressed the importance of college football having “someone in charge” of the sport moving forward.

“It’s a $1.2 billion industry with not a singular voice in charge and making decisions for the betterment of college football,” Elko said. “Until we get that, I think we’re going to continue to flounder in some of those areas. What’s best for the SEC isn’t always what’s best for the other conferences. What’s best for the other conferences isn’t always best for the SEC.

“At some point, we’re going to have to have somebody who is capable of making rules regarding the betterment of college football. Enforcement of rules, all of it. Until we get that, I think we’re all at risk of this thing not lasting like we want it to last.”

Elko’s comments come in the midst of another tumultuous offseason for college football. Just in the SEC alone, programs such as Ole Miss and Tennessee have faced uncertainty over whether or not their starting quarterbacks will be eligible in 2026.

Nick Saban is among those who have been informally floated for a potential college football commissioner role, though such a position is not currently expected to be established in the near future.

Elko and Texas A&M are entering 2026 with significant College Football Playoff expectations following an 11-0 start to the 2025 campaign.
