The No. 6 Texas A&M Aggies have gotten out to one of their best starts in recent memory, currently sitting at 4-0 and looking every bit the part of SEC and College Football Playoff contenders.
Much of this success can be attributed to the Aggies’ second-year head coach, Mike Elko, who has quickly turned A&M around in the short time he has been in College Station.
Along with his obvious prowess as a head coach, Elko’s willingness to call it like it is has also endeared him to the fans that pack out Kyle Field week in and week out.
The latest example of Elko’s willingness to speak his mind came on Wednesday during a radio call when he was asked about the officiating in the SEC.
According to Aggies’ insider Carter Karels, Elko was asked if he thinks that SEC refs get paid by the flag, to which he gave the most sarcastic response imaginable.
“I think the officials do an unbelievable job,” Elko said. “I think they’re the best thing that we have going in the SEC. I think week-in and week-out, it’s an extremely consistent performance that we get, and I’m just very blessed and honored to have them grace our football field.”
It doesn’t take an expert to pick up on the “tongue-in-cheek” nature of Elko’s response, and it’s this willingness to speak his mind that has made Elko such a fan favorite.
His ability to lead the Aggies to wins is very big for the fans in College Station as well, and that doesn’t appear to be slowing down any time soon.
