Monday was uncommonly busy at Florida State, as Seminoles offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn announced his retirement and head coach Mike Norvell announced the promotion of co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Tim Harris Jr. to the OC spot.
But Norvell wasn’t done making news, as it was reported later in the day that he planned to call the offensive plays for the Seminoles when the 2026 season begins Sept. 5.
Norvell’s experience is on the offensive side of the ball, as he was the co-offensive coordinator at Pitt in 2011 and then served as offensive coordinator at Arizona State from 2012-15 before becoming the head coach at Memphis.
Norvell also called the offense on the field for the Seminoles in 2024, a season that saw Florida State go 2-10 just one year after winning the ACC title. Norvell lured Malzahn away from his head coaching duties at UCF to run the Florida State offense in 2025 – with the Noles finish sixth in the country in total offense with 472.1 yards per game.
The Seminoles were 11th in the nation in rushing offense at 218.7 yards per game and 29th in passing offense at 253.4 yards per game during Malzahn’s tenure. FSU also finished 22nd in scoring offense at 33 points per outing.
