Mississippi State is ranked. Then it is not. Then it is. Then it is not.

It’s sort of like the “she loves me, she loves me not” scene from “The Little Rascals,” seemingly toggling at a steady rate between one status and the other.

For now, the Bulldogs (6-2, 2-2) are hovering just inside the mythical cutoff of 25 “ranked” teams, as determined by the voters of the two major polls.

Mississippi State ranked at No. 24 in both Sunday, though a made field goal against LSU in the conference opener probably would have elevated Mississippi State to the top 10, or at least the top 15, right now. Instead, coach Dan Mullen’s team looks to secure a winning regular-season record at Missouri this weekend.

Entering bowl season as a ranked team may take a 3-1 record in November. Mississippi State faces Alabama, Arkansas and Ole Miss next.
