Missouri senior linebacker Michael Scherer will have season-ending knee surgery Thursday, he said Monday in his first meeting with the media since suffering the injury against Middle Tennessee State on Oct. 22.

The surgery will prevent him from accompanying his teammates to South Carolina this Saturday, but he hopes to travel with the team after that.

Scherer was the Tigers’ leading tackler before getting injured, and he finishes his college career with 266 total tackles and 17 tackles for loss. The three-year starter said he leaned on former Tiger and current Kansas City Chiefs receiver Jeremy Maclin in the aftermath of the injury.

The 6-foot-2, 235-pound linebacker said he will try his hand at the NFL once he’s fully healthy. CBS Sports ranks Scherer the 414th overall player and No. 19 inside linebacker in this year’s draft class.
