Mizzou announces sell out for Border War game against Kansas

Memorial Stadium will be packed when Kansas visits Columbia on Sept. 6.
Mizzou announced Monday that the rivalry renewal is officially sold out. The game is being referred to as the Border Showdown, but good luck keeping Tigers fans from calling it the Border War like old times.

Mizzou and Kansas began playing in 1891 but annual meetings ended in 2011 when the Tigers left the Big 12 for the SEC. The rivalry’s renewal has been in the works for years.

For MU, it’s an opportunity to extend a 3-game winning streak. The Tigers won the 2009, ’10 and ’11 meetings, all played in Kansas City.
At SEC Media Days, Mizzou coach Eli Drinkwitz said that players know the significance of the Kansas game even though the teams have not played in over a decade.
I think rivalries are a great thing for college athletics and college football particularly, especially regional rivalries. This one goes back a long ways. The origins of our football name, the Tigers, is based off the militia that was formed to protect Columbia from people from Kansas, the Kansas area.
“This is something that goes back a long way. It’s very deep. It’s something that our team is very keenly aware of. We understand the implications, the importance to our state. Look forward to playing that game, especially having it at home.
The Week 2 meeting is set for a 3:30 p.m. ET, airing on ESPN2. Mizzou is coming off a 10-3 season in 2024, while the Jayhawks went 5-7, missing a bowl game.
