Monmouth announced the passing of defensive coordinator Louis DiRienzo Jr. on Wednesday morning.
DiRienzo, who was 34 years old, passed away “unexpectedly,” per the school’s release. An online obituary for DiRienzo says he died on June 27.
“On behalf of Monmouth Athletics, we are heartbroken by the unexpected passing of Coach DiRienzo,” Monmouth athletic director Jennifer Sansevero said in a statement. “Lou was an outstanding coach, mentor and colleague whose passion for developing young men and love for the game made an immediate impact on our football program. More importantly, he was a kind, genuine person who built meaningful relationships with everyone around him.
“Our hearts are with Lou’s family, friends, our football student-athletes and coaching staff, and all those whose lives he touched. The Monmouth community is grieving alongside them, and we will continue to honor Lou’s memory through the lasting impact he made on our program and the countless people who had the privilege of knowing him.”
DiRienzo joined Monmouth as a linebackers coach ahead of the 2025 season. He was promoted to defensive coordinator for the 2026 campaign. Prior to arriving at Monmouth, he spent 5 seasons as an assistant coach at Springfield College.
“Lou was a great person, father and coach,” Monmouth head coach Jeff Gallo said in a statement. “He poured into our players and program, making a tremendous impact during his time here. We are heartbroken for his wife Allie, daughters Giavanna and Audrina, and his entire family. We will support Lou’s family and our players through this difficult time and honor him through our daily work. Lou’s presence will remain with our team; energy never dies.”
Monmouth plays at the FCS level. The Hawks will open their season on Aug. 29 against Tennessee Tech.
