NC State became one of the first schools to make a coaching move in 2026, as they fired Dave Doeren on Oct. 24 after the Wolfpack loss to Stanford to move to 3-4. There have been rumors of many candidates, with even former NC State quarterbacks Philip Rivers and Russell Wilson reportedly getting an interview.

According to reports by Pete Nakos, Chris Low, and Noah Fleischman, it will be Rivers who will be the next coach in Raleigh.

This isn’t much of a surprise, as Philip Rivers had been considered one of the favorites from nearly the moment the job became open. With his St. Michael Catholic high school team losing 42-35 to Glenwood in the first round of the Alabama 6A playoffs on Friday night, Rivers was able to turn his focus on returning to where he starred in college.

This is a move that figures to have the Wolfpack fan base excited, as he is arguably the best player to play at NC-State. During his career in Raleigh, he threw for 13,484 yards, 95 touchdowns and 34 interceptions.

Rivers will be joined by family in Raleigh, as his son Gunner is a four-star recruit and has been committed to NC State since Feb. 23.
