NFL insider: Teams would ‘certainly’ have interest in hiring Nick Saban

NFL insider Albert Breer believes NFL teams will be interested in hiring Nick Saban should he choose to make himself available in the coming months.

Saban’s potential return to coaching has been a hot topic over the last week. It started when former Alabama quarterback and current ESPN pundit Greg McElroy cited an ‘in-the-know’ source who said Saban’s coaching career might not be over.

While a return to college football is theoretically possible for Saban, most of the conversation around his future has shifted toward another run at an NFL job. Breer added to that discourse during an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show on Monday.

“I don’t know what his appetite is for right now, but I certainly think that if he made himself available there would probably be a team or two out there that would be interested in looking at bringing him in [this offseason,” Breer said.

Breer also noted that Saban seems to have some lingering frustrations with how his previous NFL stint with the Miami Dolphins ended roughly 2 decades ago. As the story goes, the Dolphins were set to land Drew Brees before Miami’s doctors nixed the deal due to an injury concern. Brees went on to have a legendary career with the New Orleans Saints and Saban was fired by the Dolphins after a disappointing 2006 season that was plagued by poor quarterback play.

“I think the possibility exists that maybe he looks at it and says, ‘if there’s a situation where I can win quickly, where there’s a quarterback … I don’t feel completely satisfied with what happened in Miami 20 years ago.’ Every time he talks about the NFL, he’ll bring up the Miami doctors and their assessment of Brees,” Breer said. “I mean, if you remember, Dan, people were picking them to go to the Super Bowl in 2006, which was his last year in Miami.”

Saban has yet to issue any public comments since McElroy got the rumor mill started last week, although his daughter did make a post on social media saying her father was done with the coaching world.
