Former Alabama head coach and college football icon Nick Saban has heard the chatter that he’s expected to serve on a future Presidential Commission to study and monitor college sports. However, Saban himself does not currently know much about the situation.

On Wednesday, Saban met with the media while at the Region Traditions Pro Am, where the former head coach is playing his golf round with Charles Barkley. Saban was asked about reports that he will co-chair President Donald Trump’s commission on college sports, but he admitted he does not know much at this juncture.

“To be honest with you, I don’t really know much about this commission. I don’t know what this commission would do,” Saban conceded. “I think we know what needs to be done, I think we’ve just got to figure out who’s got the will to do it and I learned one thing about coaching all this years: When you get into a subject like this that’s very complex, it’s good not to talk about it off the cuff.”

While Saban does not have much to say right now, he has committed to doing anything that would help improve college football. That was his long-term goal as a coach, and that hasn’t changed in retirement.

“I’ll find out more about it. If there’s something I can do to help college football be better, I’m always going to be committed to do that. I was committed as a coach to help players be more successful in life, and I would continue to do the same thing now,” Saban said.

According to various reports, the overarching goal of the commission would be to improve the mostly unregulated and chaotic nature of college athletics, including NIL and roster limits. What that means for Saban and college football as a whole will have to wait to be seen.
