Nick Saban following Alabama’s narrow win over Florida: ‘It’s probably good for us to be in a dog fight’
Alabama hadn’t really been tested much this season but that changed on Saturday night in Atlanta as the Crimson Tide had to hold on for a 52-46 win over Florida in the 2020 SEC Championship Game.
The game featured several elite skill position players that routinely made big plays while Mac Jones (5) and Kyle Trask (4) combined to score nine touchdowns in the game.
The MVP of the game went to Najee Harris, as the senior running back racked up 178 rushing yards and two scores plus five catches for 67 yards and another three touchdowns via receptions.
Following the game, Nick Saban was asked to share his initial reaction to the matchup.
“Well, I’ll you what, they are a very challenging team, we certainly didn’t match up with them and that was my concern going in,” Saban said. “You have to give our team a lot of credit, our offense responded every time we needed to so we could stay ahead in the game. Special teams made plays that were needed at the end of the game. Great team win.
“We knew it would have to be this way. I’m excited for our players, I’m expected for our fans. It’s something significant to win the SEC Championship, Florida has a great team and we knew it would be a tough game. It’s probably good for us to be in a dog fight, we were certainly in one tonight.”
When asked about his appreciation for Mac Jones’ performance, Saban credited the entire Alabama team, not just the signal-caller for the Crimson Tide offense.
“Well, my appreciation is for every guy on our team. These guys have worked hard all year long,” the Alabama coach added. “It’s been a tough year, dealing with adversity, they’ve handled it extremely well and winning the SEC Championship is something I’m very proud of and now I’m sure we’ll get the opportunity to go to the College Football Playoff.”
